8 arrested trying to block crews from reaching Haleakala telescope site

The Maui Police Department arrested eight people Wednesday night after protesters attempted to block crews from delivering telescope materials to the summit.

Officials say a crowd of about 150 people gathered at the Central Maui Baseyard to protest the construction of the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope.

At around 10 p.m., a representative on behalf of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy called patrol officers to assist with crowd control and public safety issues.

Police said no arrests were made as the demonstrators complied and moved to the sides for the convoy to enter the roadway.

However, once the convoy reached Haleakala Crater Road, police encountered trees, rocks, and glass on the roadway.

Protesters were also seated on the roadway in attempts to block the convoy from passing, officials said.

Despite multiple requests for the protestors to abstain from blocking the roadway, police say some refused.

As a result, seven adult males and one adult female were arrested. No juveniles were arrested.

A protest last month resulted in more than a dozen arrests.
