Kakaako homeless encampment sweep starts after Labor Day

About two dozen homeless people living in Kakaako are about to get an eviction notice.

The governor’s leadership team on homelessness announced Thursday that sweeps would begin Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The sweeps will be done on a gradual basis, instead of all at once, moving people out and into shelters as space becomes available.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said “we are going to post notice on Monday and we will not enforce until the day after Labor Day. During that period of time, (service) providers will be going into this area, on the mauka side of Ilao Street, and letting people know that we are going to be beginning this phased approach.”

The sweeps will start with those living on the outskirts of the Kakaako homeless encampment where about 250 people have been living.
