A man who killed a woman and then put her body in a Waikiki dumpster will spend the next 20 years in prison.
Joseph Kahawai was sentenced on Tuesday.
In a plea deal, Kahawai pled guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
The deputy prosecutor on the case says Kahawai and the victim, 51 year old Janine Meyer, met in a homeless shelter, and that Meyer had been planning to file a restraining order against him.
Surveillance video caught Kahawai dumping Meyer’s body in 2013.
“The public’s faith in the police dept and prosecutor’s office should be restored. The police did an excellent investigation, caught the killer, took him off the streets. Justice was served in the form of a 20 year prison term,” said deputy prosecutor Adrian Dhakhwa.
Kahawai has agreed to serve the full 20 years with no opportunity for probation or parole.
