The Honolulu Fire Department is warning the public about a new scheme.
Officials say someone has been calling local residents claiming to be with the department and offering to install home fire extinguishers.
HFD has not authorized anyone to implement or solicit installation of fire extinguishers or any other fire protection service on its behalf. These calls are believed to be a scam and have been referred to the Honolulu Police Department.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the HPD or CrimeStoppers Honolulu at 955-8300.
HFD provides smoke alarms through the Smoke Alarms For Everyone program (SAFE), a free service that installs smoke alarms in local residents’ homes. However, residents sign up for their free smoke alarm at community events where they can speak directly with firefighters.
HFD does not conduct a phone campaign to solicit participation for the SAFE or any other program.
HFD personnel who install smoke alarms in homes will always be in uniform with proper identification.
