Maui pedestrian dies from injuries in collision

Maui police report that a pedestrian died due to injuries incurred from a collision on Kaahumanu Avenue, just east of Kahului Beach Road.

At around 8:21 p.m. Sunday, a Ford Edge MPVH, traveling east on the outer most lane, collided into a pedestrian who darted across into the roadway, headed in a northerly direction.

The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries.

He has been identified as Terence John Moniz, 48, of Wailuku.

The driver, a 73-year-old man from Kihei, was not injured.

An investigation is ongoing as to whether speed, drugs and/or alcohol was involved in the accident.

This is Maui County’s 16th traffic fatality for 2015, as compared to 15 at this same time last year.
