Police rule out foul play after body found in Hilo Bay

Police have ruled out foul play after the body of a man was found floating in Hilo Bay last week.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, South Hilo patrol officers responded to the 100 block of Banyan Drive and found a man floating face down about 15 feet from shore.

Officers and fire department personnel assisted the unresponsive man to shore. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was officially pronounced dead at 9:02 p.m.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday, Sept. 29, revealed that the man died from asphyxia due to drowning.

Detectives are still attempting to confirm his identity so they can notify his family.
