A Wailuku man has been arrested and charged in a bribery investigation involving a Maui police officer.
On Oct. 1, at approximately 6:38 p.m., officer Anthony Maldonado, 26, of Makawao was arrested for second-degree theft.
According to the Maui Police Department, he was released pending further investigation and placed on leave. The department also opened an administrative investigation.
Then, on Oct. 13, the department alleged that Damien Kaina Jr., 36, visited the victim in the theft case involving Maldonado.
Kaina offered an undisclosed amount of cash in exchange for the victim to withdraw the criminal complaint against Maldonado, the department said.
The victim reported this to police the following day and turned over the cash allegedly given to him by Kaina.
Maldonado was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 15, for bribery of a witness and hindering prosecution in the first degree.
Once again, he was released pending further investigation. He remains on administrative leave without pay.
Later that same day, Kaina was arrested for the same two counts. He was subsequently charged and released after posting $10,000 bail.
Maldonado has been with the department for just under five years.
