Makahiki at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

Military families will have a chance to experience an ancient Hawaiian festival of giving thanks, to learn the cultural history of Pearl Harbor-Hickam and the rich heritage of the people of Hawaii. On Nov. 7, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam will celebrate the 14th annual Makahiki Festival at Hickam Harbor Beach, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Makahiki at Kapuaikaula (the ancient name for the Hickam area), is in partnership with the Oahu Council of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. The festival involves a ceremonial arrival in canoes, offerings to Lono (deified guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace), and ancient Hawaiian games.

This event is open to anyone with base access and their sponsored guests. Military families can participate in the fun Makahiki games. For more information, call (808) 473-0369 or 473-2926.
