City hears public testimony about extending rail surcharge through 2027

Paying for rail for a longer time was the subject of a public hearing in Kapolei Thursday evening.

The city council is considering a measure that would extend the .5 percent GET surcharge by five years.

People on Oahu are paying the surcharge to fund the rail project. Currently, it’s set to expire in 2022.

Some say it’s necessary. Others say enough with the tax.

“It’s needed to completed. I think the current system ought to be completed,” said Kaneohe resident Bob Nakata.

“Hawaii’s being over taxed anyway. Ever since this started on the rail project was a bad idea,” said a meeting attendee.

Another meeting like the one Thursday is scheduled for next Monday at Washington Middle School Cafeteria at 5:30 p.m.
