Makittii Hawaii receives green card, reopens Friday evening

Makittii Hawaii

A Waikiki buffet restaurant that received a red “closed” placard last week reopened Friday.

Makittii Hawaii was the third food establishment shut down by the Health Department after multiple violations.

The state issued a green placard Friday afternoon and the restaurant’s food establishment permit has been reinstated.

According to officials, “Makittii Hawaii has corrected all food safety code violations, taken managerial control over its food operations, and passed its health inspection.”

The restaurant reopened at 5:30 p.m. for dinner.

The Health Department launched its investigation into the restaurant on Oct. 13 after receiving a report of someone possibly getting sick.

Inspectors say they found multiple health violations that day for things like inadequate hand washing, stored food temperature violations and even the presence of insects and rodents.

The restaurant was issued a yellow placard on Oct. 13.

Health officials say follow up visits on Oct. 16, 19, 22 and Nov. 5 revealed no changes. On Friday, Nov. 6 the restaurant was shut down.

Makitti Hawaii was also fined $35,000.

Two other establishments, Paalaa Kai Bakery and Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Market, also reopened after addressing their violations.

The state’s placarding system for food establishments began on July 21, 2014 and since that time DOH’s Sanitation Branch has completed more than 10,300 inspections statewide under the new program.
