One day after returning from South Africa, Hokulea’s captain on her most recent leg of the canoe’s worldwide voyage, received the prestigious David Malo Award.
The West Honolulu Rotary Club honored Nainoa Thompson for his accomplishments and contributions to Hawaii.
He just returned after nearly two months of sailing with 11 others from Mauritius to Cape Town for the voyage around the world.
Thompson’s grandmother, Clorinda Lucas, is a past David Malo Award recipient. She was the first Hawaiian woman to get her advanced degree in social work.
