The outdoor ice skating rink at Ward Village opened Friday and several people were there beforehand to test out the ice, including skating star Kristi Yamaguchi.
“Well, for the first holiday ice rink in Hawaii, it’s pretty impressive,” she said. “It’s a beautiful space … and you can look out into the ocean, so I think it’s going be fun and a holiday tradition that families can come out and enjoy.”
The Ward Village Ice Rink in the Ward Village Information Center Courtyard (former IBM Building) will be open from Nov. 27 to Jan. 10.
“It’s been sort of a fun, exciting piece for us, just to put this together, everything from constructing ice rink, getting walls and edges up to making sure everything is level,” said Todd Apo, community development vice president, Howard Hughes Corp. “A lot of the stuff that was used at the Blaisdell (for the Golden Moments Hawaii show) was used to actually freeze the ice.”
Special events are planned at the rink.
“I think one of fun ones is Dec. 18, we will have a ‘Frozen’ singalong,” Apo said. “We’ll have movie ‘Frozen’ shown on LED screens throughout area, and you can ice skate and sing along with ‘Frozen,’ so those types of things are just fun additions to being out on the ice rink.”
Kope Coffee Co. will offer hand-crafted beverages and refreshments, including hot cocoa, espresso drinks and more.
Tickets, which include skate rentals, cost $15 per person for a one-and-a-half hour skate time.
Hours are Fridays-Sundays (and weekday school holidays), 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays, 4 p.m.-9 p.m.
Special hours will be in effect over certain holidays: Christmas Eve, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
