Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and his band returns to Hawaii for the first time since 2013 to play two shows: Thursday, March 3, 2016 at the Blaisdell Arena and Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Tickets for both concerts go on sale Saturday, December 5.
Since Santana’s last performance in Hawaii, he released an album in 2014 called “Corazon,” featuring collaborations with Gloria Estefan, Ziggy Marley and his wife, drummer Cindy Blackman.
The Santana band’s musical director is Hawaii-born bassist Benny Rietveld.
Santana’a first Top 10 hit, “Evil Ways,” stayed on Billboard’s chart for two years and was soon followed by two more classics — and Billboard #1 albums — “Abraxas” (“Oye Como Va”, “Black Magic Woman”) and “Santana III” (“No One to Depend On”, “Everybody’s Everything.”) To date, Santana has won 10 Grammy Awards, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999’s blockbuster “Supernatural.”
In 1998, the group was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Carlos Santana himself has also been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on the magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” stating that “Santana’s crystalline tone and clean arcing sustain make him the rare instrumentalist who can be identified in just one note.”
