Fire destroyed a home in Pearl City this morning, displacing nine people.
Firefighters kept the flames from spreading, but still, two families are left this holiday season without a home.
The two-alarm fire — which started in a bedroom — destroyed a single story addition to the home at 786 Puu Kala Street.
Eleven-year resident Vick Howard said his daughter and a friend were in the bedroom and were able to escape uninjured, as well as the other seven people at home at the time.
A total of 34 people lived in the residence.
After firefighters put out the blaze, Howard was able to go inside his home and gather his insurance documents. He tells me he has no idea how the fire started and he plans to stay close and watch his house.
Damage to the home is estimated at $160,000. Red Cross volunteers were on scene to help, as well as volunteers from a church across the street.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
