Ocean Safety lifeguards at Ehukai Beach rescued a surfer that was unconscious in the water at the Pipeline surf break.
The call came in around 11:45 a.m. Sunday.
The surfer was witnessed catching a wave but didn’t resurface. A bodysurfer in the water held onto the 22-year-old male surfer as lifeguards responded from the shore.
Lifeguards swam the surfer to shore where lifeguards and bystanders pulled him out of the water where he regained consciousness.
EMS took over treatment and transported the patient in critical condition to a trauma center.
“If you don’t have the proper experience or knowledge of the area, please stay on the beach, go to a lifeguarded area, ask questions, it’s beautiful day to spectate and watch,” said Ocean Safety lifeguard Bryan Phillips.
The surf is estimated at 12-15 feet on the North Shore. A high surf warning is in effect for all north and west-facing shores until 6 a.m. Monday.
