Jump-starting a big weekend for Hawaii natives in the UFC, Ewa Beach native Kailin Curran secured her first victory in the UFC Thursday with a second-round submission victory over Emily Kagan in Las Vegas.

The 24-year-old snapped a two-fight losing streak, rallying after an opening round controlled by Kagan, after sinking in a rear naked choke, forcing Kagan to tap out.

An emotional Curran cried immediately after the referee stopped the fight and, when interviewed in the octagon, explained that it was the second time that she had cried in the day, getting emotional after seeing the family of fellow Hawaii native Yancy Medeiros backstage before the fight.

Medeiros will fight on the UFC 194 card on Saturday in Las Vegas against John Makdessi as part of the preliminary card, which can be seen on UFC Fight Pass.

Fellow Waianae native, fifth-ranked featherweight Max Holloway will face Jeremy Stephens on the main card which will be televised on Pay Per View.
