The Hawaii Community Development Authority reported Saturday that Kakaako Waterfront Park was closed earlier today so crews could finish their sweep of evicting the homeless in the area.
The park was reopened to the public as of 2 p.m. after being closed at 10 p.m. Friday. The enforcement began around 11 p.m.
The HCDA coordinated the sweep, which reportedly went smoothly, with State Sheriffs providing support, as a contractor was hired to sort through the homeless’ belongings.
There were no reports of any arrests being made.
The weekend sweep of the park was well-known in advance. Outreach by social service providers began two months ago, with the previous two weeks ramped up as providers handed out fliers with information about alternatives and shelter services.
Sweeps will continue to be done as needed.
