President Obama signs into law ban of plastic microbeads

President Obama signed into law Monday a bill that amends the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to ban cosmetics that contain synthetic plastic microbeads beginning on Jan. 1, 2018.

The Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015 will prohibit “the manufacture and introduction into interstate commerce of rinse-off cosmetics containing intentionally-added plastic microbeads.”

The Hawaii State Legislature was looking at a proposed bill this previous session addressing the ban of plastic microbeads, but it never got out of committee.

Local lawmakers said that the microbeads are harmful to marine life, possibly even carcinogenic.
