The demand for ahi is always through the roof at this time of the year so, not surprisingly, suppliers will be busy this week.
KHON2 got a look inside a freezer Monday morning at the Norpac Fisheries Export on Colburn Street where the workers’ pace is expected to pick up for the rest of the week, and that means changing work flow.
Spokeswoman Erin Kumai said “typically, our orders this week are about 20 times our normal amount … so we actually had to split our crew and start making two separate shifts so that we’re actually producing around the clock. So these guys are going to go home shortly, they’re going to come back tonight, and then we will have another crew come back in the morning. So we’re actually producing around the clock.”
Kumai says prices at the register should be about the same as last year. She estimates Norpac will process as much as 60,000 pounds of ahi this week, destined for stores like Costco and Safeway.
