Offshore fireworks disposal creates smoke cloud off Sand Island

Don’t be alarmed if you saw billowing smoke out on the ocean Thursday afternoon.

A federal agency is continuing disposal of surplus fireworks from a deadly Waikele bunker explosion in 2011.

The discharge was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. between Sand Island and the reef runway at Honolulu International Airport.

Fireworks by Grucci Hawaii says Thursday’s disposal is its second-to-last. A half-load will be disposed of next month.

In all, they’re trying to get rid of 5,400 pyrotechnic devices.
