Honolulu police are investigating a case of attempted murder in Kahaluu that occurred Monday afternoon.
According to Emergency Medical Services, a 24-year-old woman was doused with gasoline and set on fire at around 2 p.m.
Paramedics treated her near the intersection of Kamehameha and Kahekili highways.
She was hospitalized in serious condition with second-degree burns to both arms, legs, and back.
A photo sent in by a viewer shows a nearby van engulfed in flames.
According to the Honolulu Fire Department, firefighters were called to the vehicle fire at 1:56 p.m. on Lihikai Drive.
“It was nuts, and I came outside and the van was on fire and we heard some booms. We just saw some black smoke and a loud boom and we all ran out,” said witness Willie Moser.
Crews extinguished the fire at 2:12 p.m., but did not see anyone on fire, or receive any reports of injuries related to the fire.
Although the van was completely burned and eventually towed away, nothing else was damaged. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
KHON2 is trying to find out how and if the van is linked to the investigation.
Police have not said if any arrests were made in this case or what the motive for the attack is.
