Live fire training scheduled at Kona International Airport

Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke near Kona International Airport this week.

According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, fire training exercises will take place at Kona International Airport from Tuesday through Friday, Feb. 9-12, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily.

Aircraft rescue fire fighters from both Kona and Hilo international airports are going through an annual training exercise as required by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The training will allow fire fighters to apply their response skills to a live scenario.
