Hawai’i mounts comeback to split doubleheader

The Vikings got an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Kortney Craker in the top of the second. That was enough for Portland State to win both of their games on Saturday after defeating Utah Valley 8-7 earlier in the day.

Hawai’i was held hitless until two outs in the fifth inning when Ulu Matagiese got a double to break up the no-no.Breanna Ojala led off the sixth with a double to the right-centerfield gap. She moved to third on a wild pitch, but was cut down at the plate trying to score on a shallow fly to centerfield.

Brittany Hitchcock (4-5) suffered the loss in a complete game effort. She gave up the one run while scattering six hits with no walks and a strikeout.

Portland State’s Alyssa Burk (1-1) earned the complete game shutout win. She gave up just two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

The Wolverines tallied two runs in the top of the first inning. Morgan Smith drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tiani Hensley. On the play, the throw on the bunt went to second, but the runner slide in before the force play. Both runners moved into scoring position on another sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher. Smith then scored on a sacrifice fly to leftfield and Taleigh Williams followed by hitting a double to drive in Hensley from second.

Utah Valley loaded the bases with two outs and scored another run on a fielding error in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0.

Hawai’i got one run back in the third on an RBI-groundout by Tayana Mata with the bases loaded. But UH then stranded runners at second and third to end the inning.

The Rainbow Wahine ended the game with a furious rally. The seventh inning started with a fly out to centerfield. Keiki Carlos then ripped a single down the leftfield line andHeather Morales drove a double that hit the right-field fence on the fly to put runners at second and third. Utah Valley then changed pitchers with Dynasty Lauvai coming in for Kellee Ramsey. Kanani Aina Cabrales then hit a grounder to short allowing Carlos to score. On the play, the shortstop’s throw sailed past the first baseman which allowed Aina Cabrales to hustle into third base but pinch runner Alia Monges was cut down at the plate on a throw from the rightfielder. Mata then drove a single into left to drive in Aina Cabrales from third to tie the game at 3-3. Ulu Matagiese followed by pushing a single back up the middle. Ramsee re-entered the game relieving Lauvai in the circle, but she allowed a walk and then a wild pitch which allowed Mata to score the winning, walkoff run.
Aina Cabrales earned the complete game win, giving up three runs five hits with two walks and six strike outs. She improves to 5-2 on the season.

Ramsey took the loss for the Wolverines. She threw 3-1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits with two walks. Starter Makayla Shadle threw one inning and gave up a walk. Bailey Morre threw two innings and gave up one run on three hits with two walks and Lauvai got one out in the seventh but gave up two runs on two hits.

The Bank of Hawaii Invitational concludes on Sunday with Utah Valley and Portland State squaring off at 10:00 am and Hawai’i taking on Utah State at 12:30 pm.
