One day after the sudden departure of sophomore guard Isaac Fleming, the University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team hit the road as they will look to capture its first league title since 2002, needing one victory in its final two games to win the Big West Conference regular season.
The ‘Bows will have to do it on the road, however, playing UC-Davis Thursday, Mar. 3 at 7 p.m. PT (5 p.m. HT) and Long Beach State Saturday, Mar. 5 at 4 p.m. PT (2 p.m. HT).
Hawai’i (23-4, 12-2 BWC) remains a full game ahead of second place UC-Irvine whom it holds a tiebreaker against after winning both meetings this season. A split in the final two games will clinch at least a share of the title and two wins will give the ‘Bows the championship outright. Also still in contention are the aforementioned 49ers who are only two games behind UH in the league standings.
Hawai’i had a chance to clinch a share of the title this past weekend in front of its home crowd, but a loss to UC-Riverside Thursday put that celebration on hold. A league title was still in the team’s grasp on Saturday but UC-Irvine’s win at UC-Davis against postponed any celebration.
Getting a win this week would also secure the top seed in the Big West Tournament and an automatic NIT bid.
Stefan Jankovic has elevated his game over the past month, posting his fifth straight double-figure game this past Saturday with 28 points on a sizzling 8-10 from the floor. He’s scored north of 25 points in three of his last four games including a career-high 34 points at CSUN which helped him earned Big West Player of the Week honors.
History could also be made this week as Roderick Bobbitt needs two steals to equal Tom Henderson for most career steals in program history. He needs just two more to equal Henderson’s 160.
