She’s the mother of two surfing champions, and now she’s the one to claim victory Saturday, as Carol Ana Makana Lani Moore Yamada was crowned 2016 Lei Queen.

The 88th Honolulu Lei Queen contest was held at McCoy Pavilion Saturday.

Contestants are judged on lei-making, hula, language skills, poise and ability to convey the aloha spirit.

Yamada is mother to three-time WSL world champion surfer Carissa Moore, and two-time national Scholastic Surfing Association champion Cayla Moore.

Her official debut will be at the Lei Day celebration May 1, also her birthday, at Kapiolani Park.
