The Kauai Police Dept. reports that a 29-year-old Kapaa man was arraigned Tuesday after he broke into a Kapaa business over the weekend and attempted to evade police.
At 2:36 a.m. on Sunday, an alarm company notified police dispatch of an active break-in at Java Kai coffee shop, located on Kuhio Highway in Kapaa. The shop’s owner had installed a security system that allowed him to view the inside of the shop as the crime was occurring. The owner was then able to relay a description of the suspect to police.
Upon officers’ arrival, the suspect escaped the shop by climbing through a ceiling skylight. He had a safe loaded on his skateboard, but left it behind when he fled.
The suspect then used a roof access door to enter a neighboring business before he headed back to the roof of the building complex. Using a ladder provided by Kapaa firefighters, officers were able to detain the suspect while he was on the roof.
Niles Valvieja was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree burglary.
The suspect caused roughly $5,500 in total damages to the two businesses.
