Committees to aid in chancellor searches at UH Manoa, West Oahu

University of Hawaii president David Lassner announced Monday members of two committees who will aid in the search for chancellors at the school’s Manoa and West Oahu campuses.

UH Manoa

Current interim chancellor: Robert Bley-Vroman

“This position is critical, not only to the future of UH Manoa, but also to the university system and our entire state,” said Lassner. “UH Manoa’s next chancellor must provide strong leadership in the increasingly dynamic landscape for higher education, while continuing Manoa’s tradition of excellence as one of the world’s great research universities. The next chancellor must lead the campus forward with a spirit of collaboration and a commitment to excellence.”

The 20-member committee includes representation from the faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, the Kualii Native Hawaiian council, staff, administrators and community leaders.

The search advisory committee is beginning its work this month. Screening of applicants and nominees is expected to begin by June 2016.

On-campus visits by the finalists will be planned for the start of the fall 2016 semester to ensure that students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders are able to attend.

The president will plan to submit a recommendation for appointment to the Board of Regents during the fall 2016 semester.

The start date of the new chancellor will be determined as part of the selection process.

Bley-Vroman is scheduled to serve as interim chancellor until Aug. 31, though a university spokesman says an extension may be requested if necessary.

UH West Oahu

Current interim chancellor: Doris Ching

“The next chancellor will play a critical role in leading the campus into its exciting next chapter,” said Lassner. “As our fastest-growing campus in the fastest-growing area of the state, UH West Oahu serves its region and, through online and distance learning, the entire state with a wide range of baccalaureate programs, including in partnership with the UH Community Colleges.”

The 14-member committee includes representation from the faculty, students, the Nalimakui Native Hawaiian council, staff, administrators and community leaders. All share a common interest in the future of UH West Oahu.
