Woman who died while snorkeling off Ko Olina identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office has identified the woman who died while snorkeling in waters off Ko Olina Monday evening.

She was Karen Kitchener, 72, of Kapolei.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a call just before 6 p.m. for a missing swimmer off Paradise Cove near 92-1089 Alii Nui Drive.

According to a spokesman, a husband and wife were snorkeling in the lagoon. The husband returned to shore, but the wife did not.

After unsuccessfully searching for her with lifeguards and security, he called 911.

Air 1 eventually spotted her wedged among rocks on the shoreline. Officials said she was unconscious, not breathing and had no pulse.

She was brought to shore and pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Services.

An autopsy will be performed Tuesday.
