Event held at Honolulu Airport aims to give autistic guests more confidence in traveling

More than 30 families had a travel test run Saturday afternoon preparing for, practicing and gaining confidence in what typically do at the airport when you catch a plane.

Hawaiian Airlines hosted The Arc’s inaugural Wings for Autism event at Honolulu Airport.

Other partners are the Hawaii Autism Foundation and the TSA, since participants got to go through security too.

It was like a travel rehearsal for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and aviation professionals.

“Really in the hopes of making our guests who have autism or more comfortable during their journey also helping us as a company better understand their needs,” said Hawaiian Airlines president and CEO Mark Dunkerley.

Families also boarded a plane, stowed luggage, got seated and were briefed for take-off.
