A woman with a history of victimizing the elderly is behind bars Saturday after police say she and a partner targeted a Mililani couple.
Katy Sterio, 38, was arrested Friday in Waikiki after police were given home video of Sterio stealing from an elderly couple inside their own home.
On Saturday night, Sterio was charged with theft and Unauthorized Possession of Confidential Personal Information. Her bail is set at $200,000.
And this isn’t the first time Sterio has targeted senior citizens. In 2013, she was found guilty of felony theft and forced to pay $20,000 dollars in restitution to an elderly Pauoa man she convinced to help pay her nonexistent medical bills.
Wendell and Corazon Formales were home last week when two people — Sterio and Dino Costello — came to their door claiming to be old friends from their neighborhood. “She said that she grew up here, across the street,” said Corazon Formales.
The couple said the two claimed they were roofers and would offer a free roof inspection.
Before they knew it, they were in the house, going through their things. In security video provided by the Formales, a woman can be seen walking around the home.
Formales describes how Sterio went for her handbag. “I thought she was reading this magazine, but somehow I saying ‘why is she there?'”
Formales said she knew she was in danger, even trying to get her husband’s attention from across the room.
She says while she was speaking to the woman, Costello was checking the other rooms.
When Sterio and Costello left, Corazon Formales didn’t notice anything missing at first. But after checking her wallet, she noticed her credit cards were gone. That’s when she called police.
Both Sterio and Costello were subsequently arrested and are still in police custody.
Police say Costello was also charged with theft. His bail was set at $20,000.
