In honor of the sixth annual Mele Mei, a celebration of Hawaii’s music, hula and culture, Ala Moana Center will present a series of special performances from Sunday, May 1-Thursday, June 30. Shoppers are also invited to enjoy an exclusive exhibit honoring the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. Robyn Gee Tucker has details.
Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Exhibit: Kī Hōʻalu
Kī Hōʻalu, which literally means “loosen the key,” is the Hawaiian name for the unique fingerpicking technique of the Hawaiian slack key guitar. Recently on display at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, Calif., an exclusive collection honoring the Hawaiian slack key tradition is returning to Hawaii and will be on display at Ala Moana Center in the Mauka Wing (May 1-June 30) with additional pieces on display inside Bloomingdale’s (May 1-May 25). For a limited time, shoppers will have a unique opportunity to explore artifacts and historical instruments that trace the history of one of the greatest acoustic guitar traditions in the world.
