A Maui man accused of fatally stabbing his estranged wife in Wailuku last month has pleaded not guilty.

Stephen Schmidt, 45, appeared in Circuit Court Tuesday.

He is charged with murder for the death of Kehau Farias Schmidt, 24, as well as two counts of attempted murder for allegedly stabbing two other men who tried to intervene.

According to court documents, Schmidt confronted Farias Schmidt and her boyfriend at Foodland in Kehalani Village Center on the evening of April 19. She had a temporary restraining order against him.

That’s when, documents say, Schmidt took a knife to Farias Schmidt’s throat and chest. She died at the hospital.

Schmidt is currently being held without bail.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for June 23.
