University of Hawai’i sophomore Asotui Eli was among a group of 57 student-athletes who were selected to the Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List. The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the nation’s top center.
Eli made 12 starts – 11 at center and one at right guard – during his redshirt freshman campaign in 2015. The Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i native missed only the Louisiana-Monroe game due to injury and was one of two freshman offensive linemen in the Mountain West to start 12 games. He ranked third-best on the team with an 82 percent grade and participated in 96 percent of offensive snaps in games he played.
Four other centers from Mountain West teams made the list; Colorado State’s Jake Bennett, Nevada’s Nathan Goltry, San Diego State’s Arthur Flores, and Utah State’s Austin Stephens.
UH’s only Rimington Trophy finalist was John Estes in 2009.
The Rimington Trophy winner will be recognized Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at the Rimington Trophy Presentation in Lincoln, Neb.
