Man killed in motorcycle crash in Kaneohe

A Hauula man was killed while riding his motorcycle in Kaneohe Wednesday morning.

It happened at the intersection of Heeia Street and Haiku Road at around 8:30 a.m.

According to police, a 27-year-old woman driving a Honda sedan was heading south-bound on Heeia Street and made a left turn, striking a Kawasaki motorcycle traveling west on Haiku Road.

The 25-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Tootoo Atimua, was hospitalized in critical condition and later died. Police say he was wearing a helmet.

Police have not confirmed whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, but according to a department spokeswoman, witnesses reportedly saw the motorcycle overtaking vehicles before the crash.

The woman driving the car and a child in the backseat were both unhurt.

Haiku Road was closed between Heeia Street and Alaloa Street for about two and a half hours.

This is the 16th traffic fatality on Oahu compared to 19 at this same time last year.
