Motorcyclist dies from injuries in Lower Kula Road crash

The Maui Police Dept. reports that at approximately 6:02 p.m. Saturday, May 21, a lone motorcycle crash occurred on Lower Kula Road just north of Waimele Place in Kula.

A preliminary investigation reveals that an orange Enduro KTM motorcycle was traveling south when the it failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed left of center and collided into a utility pole located on the opposing shoulder of Lower Kula Road.

Robert Phillips Jr., 48, of Kula was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of this crash.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol have yet to be determined as this investigation is currently ongoing.

This is Maui County’s seventh traffic fatality of 2016, as compared to four at this same time last year.
