Students write messages to welcome Hokulea in New York

Hokulea is on its way to New York for World Oceans Day.

Once crew members arrive, they’ll have a big greeting from several Hawaii keiki.

Students wrote messages of inspiration to those aboard, messages that schools superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi will take with her to New York next Wednesday.

They also presented school projects which taught them to malama honua.

“My dad said that it would be really nice and I thought it would be really nice too, because as we know, everyone knows we need to learn about malama honua,” said student Anya Vrucal. “I just wanted to share how that affects me.”

Our very own Kathy Muneno will be heading to New York this weekend for the celebration.

Stay with KHON2 and for special updates when they’re there.
