The HMSA Kaimana Awards & Scholarship Program honors high school seniors and their schools for excellence in athletics, academics, community service, healthy activities, and sportsmanship. We meet one of them: Shaylin Marn, a graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama.
This three-sport athlete for the Warriors (water polo, cross country, and wrestling) is a self-described “undercover nerd” who has won a number of awards and first-place ribbons at various science and engineering fairs, symposiums, and competitions.
She’s also very community oriented. She conducted door-to-door to collections for the Hawaii Food Bank, volunteered at the Honolulu Aquarium, and is vice president of Kids4Kids, which helps Hawaii’s underprivileged and ill children.
Marn will attend the University of Pennsylvania. She says her goal is to return home to continue scientific research of native Hawaiian plants for conservation, and to discover new medical treatments.
