Travelers headed to and from Hawaii Island now have another option when it comes to air travel.
Island Air kicked off service Tuesday from Honolulu to the Kona International Airport. It will consist of five daily round trip flights, utilizing the airline’s ATR 72 aircraft which seats 64 passengers each.
At Tuesday morning’s event in Kona, president and CEO David Uchiyama said he’s hoping Island Air will capture more of the local airline market with this new service.
“It’s connecting the islands,” he said. “It’s rebuilding the relationship with the communities and getting them to feel confident in our on-time performance and reliability.”
The company has also hired 22 local employees to staff the new route.
