Pedestrian dead from injuries incurred from Vineyard crash identified

The pedestrian who died Saturday morning from injuries incurred from a vehicle crash near the intersection of Vineyard Blvd. and Punchbowl Street has been identified.

She was Benida Wellens, 56, of Honolulu.

Honolulu police and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene after the call came in at 5:03 a.m.

Wellens was attempting to cross Vineyard when she was struck by a vehicle driven by a 54-year-old man traveling east. She was reportedly just outside of a crosswalk.

The driver remained at the scene while Wellens was taken in critical condition to nearby Queen’s Medical Center, where she died a short time later.

It is unknown at this time if speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is the 20th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 26 the same time last year.
