Group from Maui delivers lei to honor Orlando victims

ORLANDO, Fla. (WKMG/WFTV/CNN) — Maui residents delivered a special gift for the victims of the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

A 49-foot ti leaf lei was flown in from Maui to honor the lives lost in the Pulse nightclub tragedy on June 12.

It took four truckloads of flowers and 400 volunteers four days to create the “Lei of Aloha.”

The lei has 49 shells, each inscribed with the name of a victim.

The lei was then flown to Orlando and escorted by a delegation of Maui residents.

WKMG reported that parts of the lei were taken to three locations: the Pulse nightclub to honor the victims, the Orlando Regional Medical Center in support for the wounded and those who helped them survive, and the Doctor Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

A Hawaiian prayer ceremony was performed before being each piece was placed.

The group made its first such “Lei of Aloha” after the terrorist attacks in Paris.
