Visitor injured after 50-foot fall in Maui’s Waihou forest reserve

A 33-year-old man is lucky to be alive after falling off a steep ledge in Maui’s Waihou Springs Forest Reserve.

Fire officials were notified at 3:13 p.m. Wednesday that a hiker had fallen 50 feet near an area known as the “Caves.”

He had been hiking with three friends on Waihou Spring Trail.

Makawao firefighters found the man, who was visiting from Perth, Australia, at the bottom of a ravine 20 minutes from the trailhead.

A backup aircraft was dispatched to airlift the man to paramedics, as the department’s primary helicopter was occupied at a brush fire in West Maui.

The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious by stable condition.
