Driver in deadly crash receives one-month sentence

The driver involved in a hit-and-run that killed a woman and injured a 13-year-old has been sentenced.

Vince Kalaola will serve 30 days behind bars, despite a plea from prosecutors for the maximum 10-year prison sentence.

The incident happened at around 5 a.m. on May 31, 2015, near Keaau Beach Park in Makaha.

A woman and her granddaughter were walking along Farrington Highway when they were hit by a car heading eastbound.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and her granddaughter suffered serious injuries.

Police told us at the time that Kalaola did not stop to help.

He eventually pleaded no contest to accident involving a death or injury.
