Despite having earned three fight night bonuses over his last five bouts, one of Hawaii’s most popular fighters in the UFC is making a move up in weight class.
Makaha’s Yancy Medeiros confirmed that his next fight will be in the Welterweight division, moving from 155 lbs. To 170 lbs.
“To compete at lightweight I needed at least an 8-week notice for camp just so I could cut the weight. I walk around at 190lbs. That’s a 35-pound cut. This Hawaiian loves to eat. Fighting at 155 took a lot of focus & preparation towards my weight cut. I feel the world hasn’t seen me perform and compete at my full potential” Mederios told KHON2 Sports Director Rob DeMello Thursday evening.
Since starting his career as a light heavyweight, Medeiros has seen much success in the lightweight division. He has secured three victories in the UFC, which included back-to-back performance of the night bonuses in 2014. His last fight, a unanimous decision loss to Francisco Trinaldo, also netted a $50,000.00 bonus as fight of the night.
“Competing at welterweight, I’ll be able stay a lot more active threw out the year, being able to fight on even a 2 week notice.I’m done with preparing to make weight to fight. I’m prepared, tested, and ready for battle. I train with the best fighters in the world and I’m Ready to represent Hawaii to the fullest” said Medeiros.
Following his loss to Trinaldo at UFC 198, Medeiros was placed on a 190-day medical suspension and is eligible to return in early October.
