Russian spy ship stationed in waters off Hawaii

RIMPAC

The U.S. Navy has confirmed a Russian spy ship recently arrived in international waters off Hawaii.

Officials say the presence of the Russian Navy Balzam-class auxiliary general intelligence ship is not affecting the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise currently underway.

“We continue to uphold the principle of freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with international law,” Lt. Clint Ramsden, U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesperson, said in a statement, and “we’ve taken all precautions necessary to protect our critical information.”

RIMPAC continues through Aug. 4 with 26 nations, 45 ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft, and 25,000 personnel participating.
