One lane of Honoapiilani Highway was closed for several hours Wednesday after an oil spill on the road.
It happened at around 9:25 a.m. between Lower Honoapiilani Road and Akahele Street.
According to the Maui Fire Department, a garbage truck’s hydraulic line burst and the driver pulled over to investigate smoke coming from the truck. The oil was burning up on the hot engine exhaust.
About 35 gallons of hydraulic fluid spilled, creating a 1.5-mile oil slick along the right north-bound lane.
Hazmat crews used an absorbent to clean the spill, while a state highways street sweeper picked up and disposed of the hazardous waste.
All lanes reopened by 1 p.m.
No one was hurt.
