Navy, HECO team up for solar facility on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

Hawaiian Electric Company and the Department of the Navy are planning to build a solar facility at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

A celebratory signing took place Thursday.

Hawaiian Electric will build, own and operate the 28-megawatt direct current solar facility at the base’s West Loch Annex.

In exchange for the land needed for the project, the base will get electrical infrastructure upgrades to Navy-owned facilities.

The renewable energy generated by the solar facility will feed into the island’s electric grid and serve all customers on Oahu, including those on the base.

“The State of Hawaii is working toward 100-percent renewables powering the state,” said Gov. David Ige, who took part in Thursday’s signing. “Every additional renewable energy project helps move us closer to that goal. Together with the Department of the Navy and Hawaiian Electric, we have made another significant step forward today.”

The project still needs to be approved by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.
