Pedestrian killed by dirt bike on Maui, rider survives fall over bridge

A 73-year-old man is dead after being hit by a dirt bike on Maui.

It happened at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday on N. Market Street at the Iao Bridge in Wailuku.

Police say a 19-year-old woman was riding a dirt bike east on Kahawai Street, ran the stop sign and lost control while trying to turn right onto Market Street.

The bike hit the bridge rail and the woman was thrown over the railing and fell into the river below.

Police say the bike then continued along Market Street and hit a man walking on the sidewalk.

He died at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The woman was also taken to the hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating whether speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is Maui County’s 10th traffic fatality in 2016 compared to 14 this time last year.
