Honolulu commemorates Hiroshima atomic bombing with annual peace ceremony

71 years ago in 1945, the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.

On Saturday, the public was invited to the 27th annual Hiroshima Commemoration and Peace Service Ceremony in downtown Honolulu at the Izumo Taishakyo Mission.

The ceremony began with a blessing, purification and prayers for peace.

“Every year we gather at this sacred place to express our diversity and demonstrate through the sounding of the peace bell our common humanity to be people of peace and hope,” said Dr. Kahu Kaleo Patterson of the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center.

After the ceremony, all who attended were invited to ring the Hiroshima peace bell, a gift to the people of Hawaii from the Hiroshima government.
