Kahuku & Konawaena claim top spots in first #Cover2 Power Poll

Kahuku (1-0) head coach Vavae Tata’s second-year campaign started off with a 49-15 victory over Leilehua (0-2) last Friday night, extending the Red Raiders’ win streak to 14 games dating back to last fall. They also start the year at the No. 1 spot in the first Cover2 Power Poll, earning 18 first-place votes of the 19 statewide media members’ ballots, plus the viewer vote at KHON2.com.

The Red Raiders are coming off a perfect 13-0 season which saw them claim their 8th HHSAA Division I State Title with a 39-14 win over Saint Louis, and their 24th OIA Championship with a 20-7 victory against Mililani.

The other two teams voted in at the top spot were Saint Louis (0-0) and Punahou (1-0) of the ILH, who are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

In Division II, Konawaena (0-0) opens at No. 1 despite being the only team in the top five that has yet to play a game. The Wildcats received nine first-place votes and will make their season debut Friday night against No. T5 Saint Francis (1-0) at Leilehua High School.

Coming in at No. 2 with nine first-place votes is Kapa’a (2-0), with No. 3 Waipahu (2-0) earning one first-place vote and No. 4 Kaimuki (1-0) also earning a lone vote in the top spot.

Cover2 will air every Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on KHON2.
