New job opportunities in West Oahu have opened up for thousands of candidates looking for work.
Ka Makana Alii, a new 1.4 million square foot shopping center in Kapolei, will feature 150 new stores when it opens later this year.
Saturday’s job fair at the UH-West Oahu campus was packed, with hundreds of people in a line that wrapped around the fair’s building.
Job seekers handed out resumes and talked with employers in hopes of leaving a positive impression of themselves.
California Pizza Kitchen needs to fill 72 spots — both servers and kitchen staff — before they open at the end of September. Spokesperson Alfred Pamatigan said “we are trying to reach out to them. We have some mailers going out to the homes in the area, anyone that is interested in moving closer to home, having more family time, quality of life, and they might not know we are opening up and we are looking so we are hoping to reach those people.”
Leona Watson of Kapolei said that “not everybody here is looking for a job — some people are actually looking to see what stores are going to be coming to their neighborhood. … Just the convenience of not having to drive in traffic (and it) just being right outside of our house, walking across the street to take our children for like a quick bite.”
There is no exact opening date for the shopping center, but center general manager Stephanie England said it will be open later this year.
Saturday’s approximate turnout of 2,000 pleased England. “I think it’s exceeded our expectations, which is a good thing, and we are very excited for the numbers that have shown up today. And I would say they are here today to hire today.”
